4 Tips for a Healthier Coffee

· healthy food,nutrition,healthy fats,antioxidants

The smell of a freshly brewed cup of coffee is just a tonic in itself. Especially if you have been bed hopping with kids, too many in the bed and I try and find an empty one to catch a few hours of sleep before the alarm goes off. Sorry, alarm what alarm, I ‘ve 3 alarms they are called Meabh, Cian and Ciaran. So yes I like coffee, here are my tip on getting the best from your cuppa.

1. Avoid Sweeteners – We know that they aren’t good for out health. Why ? because they increase our appetite, increase our weight and have been shown in research that they contribute to cancer and lastly they are a neurotoxin. You’re looking for names like Aspartame, Saccharine and Sucralose.

2.Good Quality Water– Where does your water come from? Is it a good quality? Coffee is mostly made up of water, so you really want a good sourceand to avoid added heavy metals. If you are concerned, you could add a filter to your tap and that will eliminate any nasties in the system. Maybe you want to consider buying bottled water.

3.Choose Organic – Coffee is highly processed drink, that contains a lot of chemicals. Chemicals from fertilisers, pesticides, herbicides, fungicides and insecticides. In some cases, we are reacting to the chemicals in the coffee, not the caffeine. When you are opting for organic, you are more likely to obtain an increasing amount of polyphenols- which are really powerful antioxidants. Check out your local health food shop for an organic choice.

4. Add Cinnamon – Instead of having a sprinkle of chocolate, my advice is to go for cinnamon instead. Cinnamon will help to balance your blood sugar levels and add an extra boost of antioxidants, plus its tastes yum!

I hope that you enjoyed my blog and until the next time.
