Vitamin D is a common vitamin that we probably have taken for granted in the past. I have never given it any attention, till I started practising my Nutritional Therapy in ’08. With that, also reading the recent research on the kids of our generation that are in fact are Vitamin D deficient, in connection with that, they are more cases of Rickets presenting its self in our country. Also, the number of different types of disease, disorders or health conditions that really need Vitamin D to function optimally, in fact, are deficient in Vitamin D.
Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin that is stored in the liver and fat tissue. There are 2 types Vitamin D – D2 and D3 that are found in supplement form.D3 is your best form to take orally.
In the UK The National Diet & Nutrition survey states that 90% of people have insufficient blood levels of Vitamin D and 15%- 20% are in a state of severe deficiency. So if that is happening in the UK, you can imagine that was pretty much the same here in Ireland.
It makes you wonder why this has happened over here in Ireland. Our diets have changed significantly in the last decades and even century. We are just not eating natural types of food. Millions of years ago our ancestors lived and travelled outside, naked or very little clothing, so Vitamin D was absorbed easily and more frequent. Nowadays we are wearing a lot more clothes, travelling inside and most of us are office bound, spending most of our day inside. On average we get 7 minutes of sunlight. It takes 30 mins to make any high levels of Vitamin D that we really need ( I am not advising that you go out in the sun without sunscreen for 30 minutes ) We have become a nation of putting on sunscreen immediately when we see the sun. When in fact between the hours of 11 am -2 pm is the perfect time to get your Vitamin D. It’s best to start with 5 mins, now if you’re an extremely sensitive, I would only stay in the sun for 3 minutes, expose the major trunks of the body and then go back inside. You can do this about 2-3 times. Then apply your sunscreen and enjoy the rest of your day in the sun.
What is Vitamin D need for in th body?

Sunlight is the major source of Vitamin D and fish -wild salmon and oily fish, but you need to eat 2-4 portion of wild salmon a day to get adequate levels of Vitamin D. Fortified milk, egg yolks are also a sources, but most of the food that is fortified with Vitamin D is D2 type ergocalciferol which is a lot harder for the body to absorb and convert into what the body needs.
Toxicity is the one negative issue of Vitamin D. It is stored in the liver, and you could potentially have too much, so my advice is to know your levels. I run a test in my clinic, which is a small finger prick of blood that is sent away to a laboratory and tested. The best test to run for Vitamin D is 25 -hydroxyvitamin D ( 25 OH) D. With the results of your test, we can determine what levels you need to supplement in a safe way.
If you would like to get your Vitamin D levels checked, give me an email and we can arrange an appointment.
